#LaosAngelesShine featuring April Somboun @aprilsomboun —————— Where do you live?
Brooklyn, NY. I live in a neighborhood called Brooklyn Heights. Holler at me, if you're walking over the Brooklyn Bridge - I can see you! ——————
Where is your family from?
My family is from Luang Prabang. I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and we immigrated to Vancouver, Washington. ——————
What is your occupation now?
I am the Chief Development Officer at @theadventureproject, a nonprofit creating good jobs in developing countries. In my role, I create partnerships with companies and foundations that want to make a lasting impact by helping lift people out of extreme poverty. ——————
What do you aspire to?
I hope to continually be a good mom and role model for my two kids (Hitch, age 4 and Clementine, age 2). In addition to the above, what's driving me to excel and live life to the fullest is my personal journey. When my family came to the U.S. in the early 80s with nothing, we received help from our sponsors, individuals and government programs such as food stamps, WIC, and job placement to help get us back on our feet. I want to always give back and pay it forward. ——————
What would you like to recommend to the people?
Never stop learning. Whether it's going back to school, taking a cooking class, learning how to dance, or making sure you keep up with local and national politics. No one can ever take away your knowledge. ——————
What other self-identified Laotian person should we know about and why? My sister, @vickypnw. She's one of my biggest cheerleaders, is an amazing aunt, has a big heart and listening ears with no judgment. And, she was gifted with the Lao cooking skills that I wish I had. . . . . #LaosAngeles #LaosAngelesRoots #laos #lao #peopleoflaos #laotian #hmong #iumien #laotianamerican #southeastasian #representationmatters #community #immigrantsmakeamericagreat #refugee #refugeestories  #aapi #inspire #dream #support #allboatsrise #CommunityOverCompetition

#LaosAngelesShine featuring Mattie Do @mangosodium —————— Where do you live?
Vientiane, Laos; Chanthabouly District, no joke... right by the circus. Ha. I find this ironic & amusing —————— Where is your family from? Vientiane. My mother grew up in Simeuang by the famous Wat Simeuang. There's a store there known for its awesome fresh breads, and foreign imports. My father grew up in the Vietnamese neighborhoods of Vientiane, by Ban Savang. He was a punk kid from a Vietnamese immigrant family. He spent most of his life in Vientiane & Udon Thani, Thailand living like a wildling impressing my mom with his bad boy ways on his motorcycle. —————— What is your occupation? Film director & producer —————— What do you aspire to? To make difficult to categorize genre films that don't necessarily feel the need to mesh with most people's perception of life, society, & place. Then I want to retire with a bunch of dogs by a beach or large body of water. I might acquire one terrible cat to join our pack through a series of likely unfortunate circumstances. —————— What would you recommend to the people? Lao Americans should come to Laos and see what it's actually like - it rarely is what they think it is. There's so much more to Vientiane & Laos than the imparted stories from decades ago. Also, people should try owning a whippet dog because they're so docile, sweet, and smell like sun dried cotton sheets. They're also quiet and need surprisingly little exercise. Best life decision ever. —————— What self-identified Laotian person should we know about? @lovelaoviet had an awesome little Lao & Vietnamese restaurant in Colombia. He made waves introducing Colombians to new flavors of cuisine like ours, taking our flavors and making creative cocktails, and doing charity work for Colombian children (while feeding them Lao & Vietnamese dishes). He now works with the Nuluka Fundacion, an educational charity teaching kids the importance of bilingualism and assisting them with exams. • Photo cred: Purple Wall - Bowerbird Photography for Frames Exhibition; “The Long Walk” stills - Matthew Macar

#LaosAngelesShine featuring Johnny Philavanh, JP @laolessons —————— Where do you live? San Diego, CA —————— Where is your family from? Champasak, Pakse, Laos. —————— What is your occupation now? Backend Web Developer at Smashtech —————— What do you aspire to? Many things! Given my background in software development, one vision I have is to open up a tech/coding bootcamp school in Laos. I've been working on an online Lao language learning platform/mobile app. My interest for developing the eLearning platform came about when I discovered there are no "structured" online courses for Lao American millennials like myself yet. Plus, Lao parents often use slang expressions and idioms, where resources that provide the grammar explanations of them are hard to find. I'm excited to build a long-term roadmap to bridge the language gap between those in Laos and language learners/Lao Americans for future generations in the digital age. —————— What would you like to recommend to the people? Always continually invest in yourself and grow beyond your ego. Everything material in this universe can be quickly be taken away from you. What is left is the immaterial -- your knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual development. Study other world cultures, philosophies, and different languages as well. You will start to see your own Lao culture, history, and language as interconnected pieces of a puzzle from a humbling perspective. —————— What other self-identified Laotian person should we know about and why? It would be all of you people reading this who are getting in touch with Lao culture and bringing it into the mainstream media in a positive way. We all have unique experiences and move through our own path to seek and establish an identity. Seeing how diverse yet relatable our experiences are, there is something I can identify with in almost anyone. The fact that you're reading this indicates you have some common interest, and are making the Lao culture more visible and I thank you all for that!

#LaosAngelesShine featuring Eric Thepsiri @_THEPSIRI_ ————————————— Where do you live? I currently living in Eastern Europe. But I grew up in Vernon, Connecticut which is about 20 minutes from the "University of Connecticut" UCONN, the  D-1 basketball capital of the US haha. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman —————————————
